Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerges as a distinguished contender for the Presidency, showcasing exceptional qualities and leadership. Arguably, he has been the most outstanding and impactful Vice President in the fourth Republic, championing over thirty-three policies during his tenure as the Vice President.
The upcoming 2024 general election is a momentous occasion as it presents the nation with two leaders hailing from the Northern Regions. Once again, Ghanaians face the decision between a four-year term or an eight-year tenure.
Constitutionally, John Mahama is limited to a single four-year term as he has already served in that capacity. Conversely, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, having never held the position of President before, is eligible for a full eight-year term.
In essence, the choice in this election signifies more than just a term in office. If John Mahama were to win, he would lack the accountability that comes with seeking reelection. This absence of accountability can lead to complacency and a disconnect from the concerns of the populace. There are so many political analysts who believes that, John Mahama's second coming will be nothing but a revenge on Ghanaians especially the to the people of Ashanti region who he believes has been ungrateful to him.
Conversely, Dr. Bawumia, if elected, would be incentivized to earn the trust of the people throughout his initial four-year term, as he would be eligible to seek reelection.
Beyond the aspect of accountability, the duration of leadership also impacts development initiatives. Given the ambitious promises made by both candidates, a mere four years would not suffice for the comprehensive implementation of their proposed policies. For instance, the next administration would inherit numerous incomplete projects across various sectors such as healthcare, infrastructure, Road infrastructure and education infrastructure.
Dr. Bawumia, with the potential for an eight-year term and his current role as Vice President, is poised to continue and complete these ongoing projects, ensuring a more seamless transition and sustained development.
In conclusion, the upcoming 2024 Presidential Election in Ghana presents voters with a crucial choice between short-term retribution and long-term accountability, as well as choice between a leader who will be committed to the continuation of National projects, programs and policies such as free Senior High School, Agenda 111 projects , Stem Projects, Construction of roads etc and a comprehensive vision for national development.
