The 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana guarantees to "all persons... the right to equal educational opportunities and facilities." To achieve this right, the Constitution provides that basic education shall be free, compulsory and available to all.

In order to accelerate the implementation of these provisions of the constitution, the government of His Excellency Nana Addo-Dankwah Akufo Addo took a bold decision in 2017 and introduced the free basic education policy which allow all Ghanaian children access to quality education from KG to SHS under the leadership of Hon. Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) then Minister for Education.

The education system in Ghana is divided in three parts: Basic education, Secondary education, and Tertiary education. Since 1990, the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is the main examination that is taken at the Basic education level to qualify students for admission into secondary and vocational schools in Ghana.

This year, a total of 569,095 Ghanaian children has registered for the examination. Out of this figure, 1896 candidates are from the Navrongo Central Constituency representing 1010 girls and 886 boys. Alhaj Abdallah Otito Achuliwor – the PC for Navrongo Central, while commending the candidates for their hard work and preparation for the exams, also commended government for the free basic education policy instituted to improve access and the performance of students in the BECE.

He humbly urges all candidates to comply with all the rules and regulations guiding the writing of the exams to avoid cancellation of papers and other unforeseen circumstances. “this is a crucial stage in your lives and I have no doubt that you are all going to come out with flying colours given your level of preparation, hard work, and determination”.

The New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate reminded all candidates sitting for the BECE in the constituency and country at large of the importance of the examination as it is the first test in their lives that is part of the processes which will determine the future they will build for themselves.

The Alhaj Abdallah Otito Weseh Achuliwor wishes all candidates the best of luck and God’s guidance during the period of the examination.
