As the fervor of political campaigns heightens. Political parties are vigorously crafting strategies to ensure victory for their candidates. It is imperative to enlighten voters to enable them to make well-informed choices.
Fortunately, in the imminent Presidential elections, Ghanaians have a lucid comprehension of the alternatives at hand. The 2024 election will showcase a former President and a current Vice President.
Between Former President John Dramani Mahama and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghanaians are resolute and convinced about who merits their votes, considering the performance of these two leaders in their respective political capacities.
For the benefit of my audience, I would like to delve into the leadership of John Dramani Mahama.
John Mahama has served in various leadership roles for over three(3) decades, ranging from an Assembly Member, Member of Parliament, Deputy Minister, Minister, Vice President, and ultimately the President of the Republic. Despite having held all these crucial positions, John Mahama failed to make a substantial impact on Ghanaians.
During John Dramani Mahama's Presidency, Ghanaians endured four years of darkness popularly called " Dumsor "without any resolution. All John Mahama could advise Ghanaians was to refrain from charging their phones, and if they desired uninterrupted power supply, they should be prepared to pay more. Nurses and Teacher trainees were deprived of their allowances, teachers worked for three (3) years and received payment for only three (3) months. John Mahama, as President, sponsored approximately 30 advertisements against the Free Senior High School proposal by the then-candidate Akufo Addo. He proceeded to proclaim that if he had $30 million, he would not allocate it to free Senior High School, a program he is pledging to fervently uphold in the highly improbable event of regaining the Presidency.
Regarding corruption, Ghanaians harbor unfavorable memories of John Mahama. Ghanaians will recall that, as Vice President, John Mahama was allegedly investigated by his late boss, Professor John Mills. It was not surprising that John Mahama, on an international media platform, could not provide a straightforward answer to whether he had accepted a bribe before or not.
Again when John Mahama's temperament was scrutinized during his Presidency, he failed miserably. Phrases like "I am a dead goat"and "Ashantis are ungrateful and unappreciative" , We have eaten the meat to the bone were some of his common responses to Ghanaians.
It is crucial to highlight that John Mahama left no commendable legacy as Vice President. Conversely, his main rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as a Vice President, has successfully spearheaded more than thirty-three policies and initiatives, making him the most effective Vice President in the history of the Fourth Republic. These policies and initiatives include Mobile Money Interoperability, Zipline Drone Delivery Service, Kayayies Empowerment Program, Digital Address System, full implementation of the Ghana Card, paperless port services, One District One Ambulance, Agenda 111, One Student One Student, Bank of Ghana Gold Purchase, Digitization of the National Health Insurance Database, No Guarantor Student Loan, among others.
From the aforementioned issues, it is apparent that Ghanaians' memories of the performances of both John Mahama and Dr. Bawumia remain vivid and unblemished, which will likely influence the outcome of the December polls.
The 2016 and 2020 elections, if nothing else, should serve as a reminder to John Mahama that Ghanaians do not possess the short memory that he has always presumed.
Thank you.
Best regards.
