Captain Eyi Acquah writes:
History has it that our Tradition as a useful political party has kneeled against "Party Unity" since our creation on 4th August 1947.
Even in defeat, our unity was unshakeable as a political party. Despite losing every election against Kwame Nkrumah, we have been united. We lost 1951, 1954,1956,and 1964 elections.
Yet we won 1969 election with Prof K A Busia.
Sadly, we lost 1979 election because of disunity of our tradition. We contested it as UNC and PFP.
This election seats results were:
PNP 71
PFP 42
UNC 13
ACP 10
SDF 3
THIRD FORCE 1
None of the parties had the mandatory 50% plus 1vote, so on 9th July, 1979, Dr Hilla Limann of PNP and Victor Owusu of PFP contested. Limann' PNP won with 61.4%
This is an election both UNC and PFP lost every parliamentary seat in the Central Region because of the disunity. If we had contested as we did in 1969, our tradition could have won some seats in Central Region too.
Going into Election 2024, NPP need to go Back and study how Victor Owusu and William Ofori Atta and their followers couldn't see unity as a political necessity for election 1979.
All the 4 presidential aspirants are only applying to the voters for our mandate to lead NPP in 2024.
Only one aspirant will win and be NPP Presidential Candidate 2024.
Let Saturday 4th Nov 2023 election be the thermometer to determine NPP's temperature.
*Let NPP behave as termites and remain as a mushroom.*
*I stand up to be counted for the unity of the New Patriotic Party*
