In recent years, concerns have been raised about certain practices within political parties, particularly the New Patriotic Party (NPP). As a political observer, strongly believes that the party’s primaries, lobbying, and the tendency to skew the process to ensure candidates go unopposed are not only dangerous but should not be encouraged. This article delves into the potential risks and consequences associated with these practices, shedding light on the importance of upholding democratic principles within political parties.

One of the key dangers of unopposed NPP primaries is the erosion of internal democracy. When candidates are handpicked or manipulated to go unopposed, it limits the opportunity for party members to exercise their right to choose their representatives. This lack of competition weakens the democratic fabric of the party, stifling the voices of party members and reducing their influence in the decision-making process.

Unopposed candidates often lack the motivation to be accountable to the party and its members. Without the pressure of competition, they may not feel the need to present comprehensive policy platforms or engage in rigorous campaigning. This lack of accountability can lead to complacency and ultimately weaken the party’s performance in general elections.

To ensure a healthy and vibrant political party, it is imperative to encourage fair and transparent processes that uphold democratic principles and foster healthy competition. Only through such practices can the NPP and other political parties effectively represent the interests of their members and the wider electorate.
