A team of engineering experts led by the Chairman of the Northern sector branch of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE), Ing. Abdul Shakud Iddrisu, paid an assessment visit to the recent collapsed uncompleted six-storey structure at the University for Development Studies (UDS) City Campus in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region.
In an exclusive interview with Ing. Abdul Shakud, their visit was to ascertain the level of the disaster and its possible causes, in order to give a firsthand report to their headquarters.
He further stated that this will go a long way to aid the works of the committees set to investigate the disaster.
“At this time, we’re keeping an open mind because when such disasters happen, it could be due to a number of causes. So, we’re just keeping an open mind, but in this case, we’re just coming to visit to have a look on the site and then we can report back to our bosses in Accra”, he said.
“The disaster we can say happened at the best of times, because there were no people working on the site at the time it happened. It could have been worse, so we’re lucky it happened at a time where there were no casualties”, Ing. Shakud explained.
He said this disaster serves as a wakeup call to all construction architects and experts to do due diligence at all times to avoid such occurrences.
The building, which was under construction, collapsed on May 6 after a rainstorm. It was intended to serve as lecture halls for students upon completion.
