District Chief Executive for Talensi, Thomas Duanab Wuni has thrown his support behind Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the New Patriotic Party for the 2024 Elections.
Speaking in an interview on Breakfast Today, Mr. Duanab Wuni said although the party advises stalwarts especially executives and members of the government to abstain from publicly endorsing candidates, there is no point in shielding his support for the Vice President’s candidature.
“I’m a delegate and have a vote. The time is up, I cannot sit pretending that if I go in to vote, I will be voting for any other person. I would obviously be voting for the Vice President. Sometimes, they say we shouldn’t declare but what is the point pretending? I have said that democracy would have been beautiful in this part of the world if we spoke the truth to ourselves,” he told the host, James Nana Tsiquaye.
He argued that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the party’s best bet for the 2024 Elections and will shore up its chances of clinching another victory at the polls.
“For me, I see him as a best bet. For me, scientific analysis that I have done has shown that number 2 can add onto our votes in these difficult times. Do you listen to international news?”
The DCE dismissed assertions that the prevailing economic crisis will work against Dr. Bawumia’s candidature of the party.
He insists that the crisis is a global phenomenon and thus, the Vice President cannot be held liable for the situation.
Mr. Duanab’s comments come on the back of a meeting the Vice President held with some members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament, informing them of his decision to run for the flagbearership of the party.
The party is scheduled to open nominations for the presidential primaries on May 26, 2023.
Spokesperson for the Vice President, Dr. Gideon Boako has indicated that he will formally announced his bid to run for the party’s top position before the date for the opening of nominations.
Others including former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen; former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Owusu Afriyie Akoto and MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong have announced their intentions to run for the position and are already campaigning across the country.
