The Sagnarigu constituency was created from the then Tamale North Constituency prior to the 2012 Parliamentary and Presidential  elections. 

Since its creation, it has only seen one Member of Parliament by name Alhaji A.B.A. Fuseini of the NDC. 

He won the seat for the NDC in the  2012, 2016 and in the  2020.  

In the 2020 elections,  Hon Felicia Tettey of the NPP  was highly tipped to win the seat but a combination of factors denied her the seat but her performance in the Sagnarigu constituency in the  2020 elections  was the best for the NPP since 2012. 

In the 2012 Parliamentary elections,  Hon Sheikh Yakubu Abdul- Kareem of the NPP pulled 6,935 votes  and Alhaji A.B.A. Fuseini of the NDC pulled 29, 508 votes to win the Sagnarigu seat for the first time.

In the 2016 Parliamentary elections in the Sagnarigu constituency,  Hon Habib Iddrisu  pulled  7, 888 votes on the ticket of the NPP.  

Alhaji A.B.A. Fuseini retained the seat for the NDC by pulling 26,898 of the votes. 

In the 2020 elections,  Hon Felicia Tettey of the NPP pulled 26, 434 votes for the NPP and won at 44 Polling Stations in the Sagnarigu constituency. 

This was unprecedented in the history of the constituency. 

The NDC Candidate, Alhaji A.B.A. Fuseini obtained 34, 989 votes to be elected as MP for the third time in the constituency. 

The NPP will be opening nominations in its orphan constituencies for Parliamentary primaries in February 2023,  the majority of supporters of the  NPP in the Sagnarigu constituency per checks  by the Voiceless media,  thinks that in view of the sterling peformance of Hon Felicia Tettey in the 2020  Parliamentary and Presidential elections, she should go uncontested to unite the party towards election 2024. 

The electorates are of the view that Hon Felicia Tettey will win any primaries in the Sagnarigu constituency anyways and there was the need to redirect any resources that would have been used for any internal elections whose outcome is obvious to the task of winning the Sagnarigu seat for the NPP for the first time.
