Reports have indicated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, has put forward the name of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, to Nana Akufo Addo as his running mate for the upcoming 2024 general election. Sources close to the Presidency have confirmed that the President has approved of NAPO's selection and has offered his blessings and guidance to Dr. Bawumia.

I am delighted and excited about the decision to choose Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh. Despite receiving endorsements from key stakeholders in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Bawumia still needs to reassure the region of his unwavering dedication to its development.

 Therefore, his selection of NAPO, who is the grandson of Manhyia, holds significant importance. It is worth noting that Manhyia adopted Dr. Bawumia as their own after the passing of his mother in 2021, signifying that a victory for Dr. Bawumia and Matthew Opoku Prempeh would be a triumph for Manhyia and the Ashanti people, who will undoubtedly support this ticket.

Undoubtedly, if elections had taken place last year, the Ashanti Region would have faced a substantial apathy issue. Many Ashantis believed that the New Patriotic Party had not fulfilled their expectations in terms of development projects in the region, even leaving many government-initiated projects unfinished. Given that the Ashanti Region is considered the stronghold of the Party, this was particularly disheartening. 

However, the selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who is the grandson of Manhyia, as the running mate, coupled with the close relationship between Manhyia and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (akin to a father-son relationship), instills hope in the region leading up to the December polls. Dr. Bawumia's choice of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh conveys a resounding message to those dissatisfied with the level of development in the region under the New Patriotic Party, assuring them that his administration will prioritize the progress of Ashanti, as he will not disregard the counsel of his father, the King, in matters concerning the region's development.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party should consider aligning Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong with the running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh and the regional executive, led by Chairman Wontumi, focusing their efforts primarily in the Ashanti region to address the perceived lack of enthusiasm. The running mate and his team should prioritize collaboration with Traditional authorities during their campaign tour.

Based on the aforementioned strategy, I am confident that Dr. Bawumia will secure a significant and resounding victory in the Ashanti region during the December elections.
