The untimely demise of Hon. Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko left a void that needed to be filled.

Out of the number of aspirants who vied for the position to represent the New Patriotic Party in the stead of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the widow of Mr. Agyarko received an overwhelming endorsement from the party’s delegates.

It manifestly explained the confidence the people reposed in her. This level of confidence would propel Lydia Seyram Alhassan to the top by annexing the ultimate, the Member of Parliament slot on the ticket of the NPP on Thursday, 31st January, 2019. In fact, Lydia Alhassan beat her closest rival, Delali Kwasi Brempong, to pulp in the by-election.

Prior to the election, members of the NDC religiously attacked Lydia Alhassan on several media networks. According to Delali Kwasi Brempong, electing a woman to face him was a ‘big’ mistake.

A Member of Parliament from the NDC stock had this to say:

“Not long ago, they [NPP] lost one of their MPs and we are expecting his girlfriend, not the wife, because he was not married to her, to be mourning the boyfriend. I don’t know which part of the Constitution says that side chicks can now inherit people’s husbands’ properties.” ~ Hon. Joycelyn Tetteh ,NDC MP for North Dayi

These were precursors to what the Minority had in stock for Honourable Lydia Seyram Alhassan at her swearing-in event.

The Minority, on Tuesday, 5th January, 2019, put up a behaviour that has sent shockwaves down the spines of many well meaning Ghanaians.

The Minority, amongst other things, have referred to Honourable Lydia Seyram Alhassan as a “BLOODY WIDOW” on the flimsy reason that there were a few violent acts during the election which saw her elevated to the position of a Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.

Women of Faith and Substance (WOFAS) is appalled by the chauvinistic, bigoted and hugely misogynistic attitude of the Minority in Parliament towards the newly elected MP.

The level of animosity shown by the Minority to the wife of the late Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko is perplexing.

Simply stating the obvious, the MPs on the side of the Minority are anti-women.

Their conduct is repulsive much as it condemnable. Parliamentarians are to promote gender equality in all its spheres but the Minority we have in Parliament is doing the opposite.

WOFAS calls on all women in Ghana and civil society organisations to condemn this loutish behaviour of the Minority in Parliament.
